Ecuador into Copa quarters after Mexico stalemate
Ecuador booked a place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Copa América on Monday morning local time after a 0-0 draw against Mexico which saw the latter bow out of the tournament having finished third in Group B with lower goal difference in comparison with the Ecuadorians.
Ecuador, like Mexico had four points from their group games and they will play against Argentina in the ‘last 8’ in the United States.
Ecuador was handed a penalty late in the game but a VAR review ruled out the spot kick.
That did not stop Mexico’s coach, Jaime Lozano from expressing his dismay on the initial decision.
“I don’t like to talk about our referee.

It is what it is and I believe we have more possibilities now that we have VAR,” Mexico coach Jaime Lozano told the media in his post match press conference.
“After an early exit, I don’t want to talk about the referee.”
The defeat is Mexico’s first to get out of the group stage for the fourth time in its last five Copa América appearances.
