Shehu Sani Blames Northern Leaders, Citizens for Region’s Problems

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized Northern leaders and the people for the region’s long standing issues, asserting that many of these problems are self-inflicted.

In a candid Facebook post on Monday titled “The North; after blaming others, let’s probe ourselves,” Sani detailed several points where he believes the North has failed itself.

He argued that despite the availability of free public education, many young people in the North still avoid school.

Sani also criticized cultural practices that prevent women from working or contributing financially to their families, leaving them vulnerable when their husbands pass away.

Sani pointed out the reluctance of young people to take up apprenticeships, and the tradition of sending children to religious teachers in cities where they end up begging or stealing.

He also highlighted the region’s tendency to protect and praise its leaders despite decades of missed opportunities and the rise of banditry and terrorism from within its own communities.

Further, Sani criticized the region’s electoral choices, religious conspiracies that hinder public health efforts, and the mismanagement of resources and industries under Northern leadership.

He lamented the cultural barriers preventing girls from pursuing higher education or joining the workforce.

Sani concluded by noting that despite the North’s vast resources, population, and history of political power, the region continues to struggle.

He urged the Northern population to stop blaming external factors for their woes and to recognize that “eighty percent of our problem is ourselves and not anyone ‘outside of ourselves’.”
