Nigerian footballer Paul Julius died in auto crash in Cyprus

In a tragic turn of events, Nigerian footballer Paul Julius lost his life in a car accident on the Paralimni-Protaras road early Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on August 20, 2024, near Pernera, when Julius’s car collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, according to police reports.

Julius, a talented striker from Plateau State, had recently joined Cyprus football club Enosis Neon Paralimni, just three weeks prior, following his transfer from Egyptian side El Gaish.

Enosis Neon Paralimni FC released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of their player, who had shown incredible resilience throughout his life and career.

“It is with deep sadness and pain that we express our sincere condolences on the unexpected loss of our footballer Paul Julius,” the club stated. “The tragic news of his death has shocked us all. Despite the hardships and sufferings he faced to join our family, he remained steadfast and determined to fulfill his goals. His memory will live on in our hearts, and his absence will be felt. We are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, a 74-year-old man, is currently receiving treatment in a hospital. Fortunately, his injuries are not life-threatening.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and officers from the Famagusta Traffic Department are appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information that may assist in their inquiries.
