In a troubling incident that has sparked widespread outrage, Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has petitioned Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for an investigation into an alleged assault by Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State.

The petition, filed on October 28, 2024, follows the emergence of a viral video depicting Ikwechegh allegedly yelling and physically assaulting Abuwatseya after a food delivery.

According to the footage circulating on social media, the incident occurred on October 27, when Abuwatseya arrived at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, to deliver a food item.

The driver reportedly called the lawmaker to inform him that he had arrived, requesting that he come outside to collect the delivery. This request seemingly provoked Ikwechegh, who responded with verbal abuse, calling the driver “stupid” and “idiot,” before allegedly slapping him twice and threatening further violence.

In a shocking escalation, the lawmaker allegedly threatened to make the driver “disappear from Nigeria,” demonstrating a blatant misuse of power.

Despite the harassment, Abuwatseya insisted on being compensated for his service, but Ikwechegh refused and dared him to involve the police, asserting that no repercussions would follow his actions.

Abuwatseya’s petition, drafted by his lawyer Marvin Omorogbe from Deji Adeyanju & Partners, outlines serious allegations against Ikwechegh, including grievous assault, abuse of power, attempted murder, and threats to life.

The petition highlights the driver’s right to safety and justice, condemning Ikwechegh’s behavior as particularly egregious given his position as a public official responsible for safeguarding the rights of citizens.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has since stepped in, inviting Ikwechegh for questioning at their Maitama headquarters. The police confirmed that preliminary investigations have commenced, revealing a dispute over the delivery method as the catalyst for the altercation.

A police spokesperson expressed grave concern regarding Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for the authority of the Inspector General of Police during the incident.

As the investigation unfolds, the police have committed to conducting an impartial inquiry into the matter, ensuring that justice is served. The outcome will not only impact the individuals involved but also reflect broader societal concerns regarding the treatment of citizens by those in positions of authority.
