Gas explosion in Port Harcourt leaves 18 injured
A gas explosion in the Oroazi community of Port Harcourt on Sunday evening left 18 people injured and caused significant damage to nearby buildings, according to the Rivers State Police Command.
The explosion occurred at a gas refilling shop where a welder was reportedly repairing a refrigerator. Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Command spokesperson, confirmed the details to journalists on Monday.
“Yes, I can confirm that the explosion was caused by a welder repairing a refrigerator,” Iringe-Koko stated. “The technician was using a gas cylinder to weld while simultaneously attempting to refill gas in the refrigerator. This unfortunate combination led to the explosion.”
Among the injured were the technician and several bystanders. While the blast caused extensive damage and panic in the area, authorities reported no fatalities.

This incident adds to a string of gas-related and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incidents recorded in Rivers State throughout 2024, raising concerns about public safety and adherence to safety protocols.
The police spokesperson assured the public that a comprehensive investigation into the explosion has been initiated. “We are committed to uncovering the specifics of this incident and will provide updates as the investigation progresses,” she said.
The explosion highlights the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, particularly in handling gas and welding equipment. Residents and business owners in the affected area are calling for heightened safety awareness to prevent future occurrences.
Meanwhile, the injured are receiving medical treatment, and emergency responders have cleared the site of debris to ensure public safety. Further updates from authorities are expected in the coming days.
