Defence Headquarters links surge in terrorist attacks to influx of foreign fighters

The Defence Headquarters has disclosed that the recent rise in terrorist activities across Nigeria’s North East and North West regions is tied to an influx of foreign fighters from the volatile Sahel region.

These reinforcements have emboldened terror groups, resulting in escalated attacks on military installations and civilian communities.

At the year’s first military briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, Major General Buba Edward, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, delivered a sobering assessment of the security challenges confronting Nigeria.

Despite the gravity of the situation, he reaffirmed the military’s unwavering commitment to dismantling terrorism and restoring peace.

Maj. Gen. Buba attributed the resurgence in terror attacks to the arrival of foreign fighters who collaborate with local accomplices.

“These fighters are from the Sahelian region,” he said. “They work with informants who monitor and report troop movements, giving the terrorists a tactical advantage. This has emboldened the enemy, leading to weeks of intensified violence that have shaken communities and raised questions about our collective security response.”

Despite these challenges, Maj. Gen. Buba emphasized that the military remains resolute in its mission to eradicate terrorism. “Defeating an enemy isn’t just about tactical victories; it’s about breaking their will to fight,” he stated.

 “Wars are not won overnight,” Buba reminded Nigerians. “This is a long and enduring operation, but our determination to destroy these terrorists and secure a better future for all Nigerians remains unshaken.”

While acknowledging the military’s primary role in the fight against insurgency, Maj. Gen. Buba underscored the importance of national unity and collective responsibility. Echoing a popular 2025 slogan, he said, “The military dey for you, dey for us. Security is everybody’s business. If we compromise on security, we compromise everyone’s future.”

He called on citizens to remain vigilant and supportive, stressing that information sharing and community cooperation are crucial in overcoming the nation’s security challenges.

Maj. Gen. Buba concluded his briefing with an optimistic yet realistic outlook. “We’re not there yet, but with each passing day, we inch closer to victory,” he said. “As you ‘dey for who dey for you,’ know that the military stands unwaveringly ‘dey for you, dey for us.’ Together, we will prevail.”

The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure and terror-free Nigeria, emphasizing that the ongoing struggle is part of a broader effort to ensure lasting peace and stability across the country.
