The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended Amanam Bassey Abraham, an 18-year-old resident of Akpautong Village, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, for unlawful possession of a locally made pistol firearm.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the arrest was made on April 18, 2025, at around 4:00 PM, following credible intelligence received by the command.
“Operatives of the Command apprehended one Amanam Bassey Abraham, an 18-year-old male from Akpautong Village,” DSP John stated. “A search conducted on the suspect at the time of arrest resulted in the recovery of a locally made pistol.”
During initial interrogation, the suspect claimed the weapon belonged to his landlord, who allegedly handed it over as collateral for a ₦5,000 loan.
The landlord’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
The suspect further stated that he planned to hand the weapon over to his father for safekeeping.
DSP John noted that the police have launched a full investigation to identify and apprehend the said landlord for further questioning regarding the origin and purpose of the weapon.

The Commissioner of Police commended the swift action of the officers involved and reiterated the command’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of residents across the state.
“The Command remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the safety and security of all residents of Akwa Ibom State,” John concluded.
The arrest underscores the importance of community vigilance and intelligence-sharing in combating illegal arms possession and crime in the state.
