Jubilant scenes erupted in Nigeria’s capital on Monday as the Super Falcons returned home to a hero’s welcome following their record-breaking victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The triumphant squad, accompanied by team officials and coaching staff, arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to a rousing reception from fans, sports administrators, and government officials, all eager to celebrate Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title — the most by any nation in the tournament’s history.

To mark the occasion, a city-wide victory parade has been scheduled to pass through key landmarks in the Federal Capital Territory, including Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama, and Wuse Market.

The celebratory motorcade will give fans an opportunity to cheer and show appreciation for their football heroines.

The high point of the celebrations is expected to be a special reception at the Presidential Villa, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is slated to host the team later today.

The visit is seen as a formal recognition of the Super Falcons’ outstanding achievement and a testament to their status as national icons.

Nigeria clinched the 2024 WAFCON title in dramatic fashion on Saturday night, defeating host nation Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses 3-2 in a pulsating final.

The victory not only reinforced the Super Falcons’ dominance in African women’s football but also marked a significant moment of national pride and unity.

Sports Minister Senator John Owan Enoh, who welcomed the team at the airport, hailed their determination, skill, and resilience. “The Super Falcons have once again made the nation proud. Their commitment on and off the pitch embodies the true Nigerian spirit,” he said.

The victory has sparked celebrations across the country and renewed calls for greater investment in women’s sports, especially football, as the team continues to serve as an inspiration for young girls nationwide.
