President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose current term was initially scheduled to expire on August 31, 2025.
The announcement, made by the Presidency on Thursday, stated that the extension is aimed at allowing the Customs boss to consolidate ongoing reforms and deliver on key strategic initiatives aligned with the administration’s economic and trade agenda.
According to the statement, the extension will enable Mr. Adeniyi to: Complete the modernisation programme of the Nigeria Customs Service, oversee the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and ensure Nigeria fulfils its obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

President Tinubu praised Adeniyi’s leadership and commitment, describing him as a public servant whose tenure has been marked by reform-minded actions and a clear vision for institutional efficiency.
“The President remains confident that this extension will strengthen the NCS in its core mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security,” the statement added.
Mr. Adeniyi, a career customs officer and seasoned administrator, assumed office in 2023 and has since led major policy changes and digital transformation efforts within the Service. His tenure has been characterised by a push for transparency, improved inter-agency collaboration, and better service delivery at the nation’s ports and borders.
With the extension, Mr. Adeniyi is now expected to remain in office until August 31, 2026, as the Tinubu administration prioritises continuity in key public sector leadership roles to ensure the success of its reform agenda.
