Ibom Air passenger remanded in Kirikiri for assaulting airline officials

An Ibom Air passenger, Comfort Emmanson, who allegedly assaulted airline officials during a flight from Uyo to Lagos, has been charged to court and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

The Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Tunde Moshood, confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

Moshood, speaking on behalf of Minister Festus Keyamo, said Emmanson’s arrest and prosecution underscore the government’s determination to address the rising cases of unruly conduct by air travelers.

The incident occurred onboard an Ibom Air flight bound for Lagos, where Emmanson was accused of physically attacking airline staff.

Following the altercation, she was taken into custody, charged before a court, and ordered to be remanded pending further hearings.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had earlier on Monday warned that it would step up enforcement against disruptive behavior at airports and onboard aircraft.

NCAA officials noted that cases of passengers verbally or physically abusing airline workers, interfering with flight operations, or refusing lawful instructions have become increasingly frequent.

“This will not be tolerated,” an NCAA statement read. “The safety and security of flight operations depend on the cooperation and discipline of all passengers. We will not hesitate to prosecute offenders and ensure deterrent penalties.”

The incident comes barely days after a separate controversy involving Fuji music icon, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1 or K1, and domestic carrier ValueJet.

The singer allegedly attempted to prevent a flight from departing after he was deboarded, sparking heated exchanges with airline officials.

Industry watchers say the recent spate of in-flight disruptions highlights the need for stricter passenger conduct regulations and public sensitization campaigns.

The NCAA has promised that more offenders will face arrest and prosecution to safeguard Nigeria’s aviation sector from safety-compromising incidents.
