Two killed as trailer ploughs into Gombe market, goods destroyed (Watch video)
Two people have been confirmed dead and goods worth millions of naira destroyed after a trailer loaded with grains lost control and crashed into the New Mile 3 Market along the Gombe–Yola Highway in Gombe State on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The accident involved an articulated DAF truck which reportedly veered off course while attempting to enter a nearby filling station. The vehicle subsequently rammed into parked motorcycles, pedestrians, and several roadside shops in the bustling market corridor, causing widespread panic and devastation.
Eyewitnesses said the impact of the crash was severe, as traders and passers-by were caught unawares in the busy commercial area, which is usually crowded during peak hours.
Emergency responders and security operatives later arrived at the scene to evacuate victims and restore order, while damaged goods and wrecked structures were seen scattered across the market vicinity.

Authorities confirmed that a female police officer, Sharifa Gaina, and an unidentified male victim died instantly as a result of the crash.
Two other persons sustained injuries, including the driver of the truck, who is currently receiving medical attention along with another injured victim.
Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure or difficulty maneuvering the heavily loaded truck into the filling station entrance, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Security agencies have since cordoned off parts of the market to prevent further hazards, while efforts continue to clear debris and restore normal trading activities in the area.
Authorities in Gombe State have also urged motorists, especially heavy-duty truck operators, to exercise greater caution when navigating densely populated commercial zones to prevent similar tragedies.
