Carrick opens door for Rashford’s unexpected Manchester United comeback

Marcus Rashford could be in line for a sensational return to Manchester United, with interim manager Michael Carrick reportedly open to reintegrating the forward into the squad at Old Trafford after a turbulent spell away from the club.

The 28-year-old England international appeared to have brought an end to his United career in 2024 following a breakdown in his standing under former manager Ruben Amorim, leading to successive loan moves away from the club.

Rashford spent time on loan at Aston Villa and later at Barcelona, where he contributed to the Catalan side’s successful La Liga title-winning campaign last month. However, despite that success, a permanent stay in Spain now appears increasingly unlikely.

Barcelona have reportedly opted against activating the £30 million option to sign Rashford permanently, instead redirecting their transfer plans toward Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in a £70 million deal.

The decision leaves Rashford in a state of uncertainty, with his long-term future unresolved despite still being under contract with Manchester United until June 2028.

According to reports, Carrick has now signalled a willingness to welcome the forward back into the fold if no permanent transfer materialises this summer. The United boss is said to have maintained communication with Rashford and has also consulted members of the club’s leadership group regarding a possible reintegration.

Rashford, who has scored 87 goals in 287 Premier League appearances for United, has not played for the club since a fixture against Nottingham Forest in December 2024. Despite his absence, club insiders believe a return to Carrington for pre-season training remains a realistic possibility.

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that financial and contractual realities could force both player and club into a temporary reunion.

“It’s all well and good saying the Man United thing is gone, but the fact of the matter is he’s under contract and he’s on a big wage. He ain’t going to walk away from that and it doesn’t look like any club is going to take him for the amount of money that United want for him,” Butt said.

He added that a return to pre-season under Carrick could be a practical solution given the circumstances.

“He might be forced back to United, at least for the pre-season. Knowing Michael Carrick, he will be receptive to any player coming into training and pre-season… If Rashford was to come back for pre-season and Michael maybe didn’t get the right players that he wanted in the transfer window, you never know,” Butt explained.

Rashford’s situation now leaves Manchester United with a complex decision as they balance squad planning, wage structure, and player reintegration ahead of the new season. While a permanent exit is still possible, the door to an unexpected Old Trafford comeback appears to have quietly reopened.
