Turkish giants Beşiktaş have announced the death of Sunday Ndidi, the father of their midfielder and Nigeria international, Wilfred Ndidi, following a fatal car accident in Delta State.
The club confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in Umunede, a community in Delta State, Nigeria.
Details surrounding the accident were not immediately disclosed.
In an official statement released via their verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Beşiktaş expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the player and his family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” the club said.
“May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
The news has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from fans, teammates, and members of the football community, many of whom have taken to social media to express their support for the Nigerian star during the difficult period.
Ndidi, one of Nigeria’s most influential midfielders, recently captained the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
The tournament was particularly memorable for the Beşiktaş man, as he also scored his first-ever international goal for Nigeria.
He was named captain of the senior national team ahead of the AFCON tournament following the retirement of former captains Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong, marking a significant milestone in his international career.
As tributes continue to pour in, the football world stands in solidarity with Wilfred Ndidi and his family as they mourn the loss of a loved one.
