Ronaldo inspires Portugal to dramatic World Cup comeback against Croatia
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a historic penalty as Portugal fought back to beat Croatia 2-1 after extra time and secure a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
Portugal dominated the early stages, with Ronaldo, Pedro Neto and Rafael Leão constantly threatening, but Croatia grew into the contest before Ivan Perišić gave them a surprise lead in the 53rd minute.

Portugal drew level in the 68th minute after VAR awarded a penalty for a foul on Renato Veiga. Ronaldo converted from the spot for his first-ever World Cup knockout-stage goal.
With extra time looming, substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed home Rafael Leão’s cross in the 94th minute to complete Portugal’s comeback.
Croatia thought they had forced extra time with a late Josko Gvardiol strike, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside, sparking protests from Croatian players and fans.
“It was a difficult match, but we believed until the end,” Ronaldo said after the victory.
Portugal will now face Spain in the Round of 16 as Ronaldo continues his pursuit of World Cup glory.
