A yet-to-be-identified man was reportedly killed by a mob on Wednesday morning after allegedly obstructing traffic along the FMC–OSAMCA corridor of the Idi-Aba–Kemta–OGTV road in Abeokuta.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that the man blocked one lane of the four-lane carriageway around 10:20 a.m., carrying heavy metal objects in both hands.

His actions reportedly caused a near 30-minute gridlock, leaving motorists and pedestrians stranded and raising concerns over public safety.

Distress calls were reportedly made to the Nigeria Police Force Kemta Division, but before officers arrived, local youths allegedly confronted the man. Witnesses said he was repeatedly struck with wooden objects.

By the time police reached the scene, the man was unconscious. Attempts to clear the road and ease traffic were reportedly hampered as some members of the crowd continued to assault him.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased or provided further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Security analysts caution that such mob actions highlight the urgent need for rapid response by law enforcement to prevent escalation. Lagos-based criminologist, Chinedu Okafor, said, “This incident underscores gaps in crowd control and emergency response. Timely police intervention could prevent tragic outcomes in situations involving public disturbances.”

Residents in the area expressed shock over the violence, urging local authorities to enhance traffic management and ensure public safety along busy corridors.
