Eddie Howe steps down as Newcastle United head coach after five-Year stint

Eddie Howe has stepped down as head coach of Newcastle United with immediate effect, ending a five-year spell that transformed the club into a regular contender in English football.

The 48-year-old informed the club’s hierarchy of his decision to take a break from management, with both parties reaching an amicable agreement to part ways just weeks before the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Howe’s departure follows a difficult 2025/26 campaign in which Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League. The club also experienced a turbulent summer transfer window that saw the departure of several key players, prompting speculation over the team’s direction ahead of the new season.

Reports indicate that although Howe initially planned to remain at St James’ Park after the conclusion of last season, he later decided to step aside, citing the need for a sabbatical after nearly five demanding years in charge. During his tenure, he guided Newcastle through a period of major transition following the club’s takeover, led them into European competition, and delivered their first major domestic trophy in decades with victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup.

The decision also comes after a disappointing pre-season, including a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City, with both Howe and the club’s leadership reportedly agreeing that a fresh approach would benefit Newcastle’s long-term ambitions.

In a statement, the club described Howe’s departure as amicable, noting that preparations were already underway for the next phase of the team’s development.

Attention has now turned to Howe’s successor, with German coach Matthias Jaissle emerging as the leading candidate for the role. Jaissle, currently in charge of Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, is said to have held positive discussions with Newcastle officials.

The shared ownership of both Newcastle United and Al Ahli under Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is expected to ease negotiations should the club move forward with his appointment.

Howe leaves Newcastle having overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history. Appointed in November 2021, he guided the Magpies away from relegation danger, secured UEFA Champions League qualification on two occasions, and restored optimism among supporters before deciding to bring his tenure to a close.

Newcastle are expected to announce further details regarding the managerial transition as preparations continue for the new Premier League season.
