Troops rescue four Gwoza abductees held by terrorists since 2023

The Nigerian military has rescued two women and two children who were abducted in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State during the 2023 farming season.

The victims were among 361 abductees rescued by troops during various military operations across the country in the past week.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this on Friday while providing an update on ongoing military operations nationwide.

Onoja said the four victims were rescued on August 1 from a terrorist enclave near Amuda Bridge in Gwoza Local Government Area.

According to him, the victims had remained in captivity since the 2023 farming season before troops located and rescued them.

“The four victims had reportedly been held captive since the 2023 farming season before their recovery and subsequent handover to the community leadership,” he said.

The military said the rescue formed part of its sustained operations against terrorists and other criminal elements across the country.

The latest operation underscores the continued efforts by security forces to rescue civilians held captive by terrorist groups and restore security to communities affected by insurgency in the North-East.
