Gunmen kill popular comedian Aiza Nwosu, another man in Anambra
Tension has gripped Awka, the Anambra State capital, after unidentified gunmen killed popular comedian and media personality Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza Nwosu, and another man in separate shooting attacks.
The attacks occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at two locations in the state capital, according to the Anambra State Police Command.
Nwosu was shot along S.M. Okeke Street in the Amaikwo area of Awka, while the second victim, whose identity had not been established as of Monday, was killed along Capital City Road in Amaenyi.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary information indicated that three unidentified men travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks.
The command said its operatives responded after receiving distress calls and recovered the bodies from the two locations. The victims were taken to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Police operatives also recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes.
The motive for the killings remains unknown. Some residents and eyewitnesses have suggested that the attacks could be linked to cult-related activities, but the police have not confirmed that claim.
The incident has generated concern among residents, particularly because the attacks occurred at separate locations within the city.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.
He ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The police have also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations across Awka and neighbouring areas as efforts continue to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The command appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and others who may have witnessed the attacks or have credible information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle allegedly used in the shootings to contact the police.
Police assured members of the public that information provided would be treated confidentially.
The killing of Nwosu, a familiar figure in Awka’s entertainment and media circles, has also triggered mourning among colleagues, friends and residents who knew the comedian and master of ceremonies.
