Kwara border community rocked as terrorists overrun military camp, kill three

Three Nigerian soldiers have been killed following a pre-dawn attack by suspected terrorists on a military camp in Kemanji community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, threw the border community into panic as sustained gunfire and explosions were reportedly heard for several minutes during the assault.

Eyewitnesses said the armed assailants stormed the military installation without prior warning, engaging troops in a fierce exchange of fire.

The attackers, believed to be operating from nearby forested areas, reportedly took advantage of the early morning hours when some soldiers were asleep or off-guard.

A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, described the attack as sudden and highly coordinated.

“Kemanji is a border community close to thick forest areas. Few of the soldiers were asleep around 3am when the terrorists invaded their camp and killed three of them before others responded,” the source said.

Military personnel at the camp were said to have quickly regrouped and launched a counter-operation to repel the attackers. Although details of the engagement remain unclear, residents reported heavy exchange of gunfire that lasted into the early hours of the morning.

Security sources indicated that reinforcements may have been deployed to the area following the attack, as authorities move to prevent further incursions and track the fleeing assailants.

The Kemanji attack adds to growing security concerns in remote border communities within Kwara State, where armed groups are believed to exploit difficult terrain and forest cover to launch raids.

Residents have repeatedly called for increased military presence and improved surveillance in vulnerable areas, particularly those close to forest corridors that are suspected to serve as hideouts for criminal elements.

Military authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of press time, but security operations are expected to intensify in the area following the deadly attack.

The situation in Kemanji remains tense, with residents expressing fear of possible reprisal or further assaults in the coming days as security forces continue search-and-clear operations in surrounding forest zones.
