The terrorist group Boko Haram has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Nigerian government, threatening consequences if its demands concerning hundreds of captives allegedly held in its custody are not met.

In an online message circulating online and dated April 19, 2026, a masked spokesperson for the group, speaking in Hausa, claimed that the insurgents are currently holding 416 abducted individuals, including women and children, in Borno State.

The group said the captives were taken during previous raids in communities within the state, which has long been at the epicentre of insurgent violence in Nigeria’s North-East.

In the recording, the spokesman identified the group as “Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad,” a name commonly associated with Boko Haram. He addressed the message to both the Nigerian government and the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA), stating that the ultimatum was both a “first and last message.”

He warned that failure to comply within 72 hours would result in severe consequences for the captives. The group did not publicly specify the nature of its demands in the video but referenced prior ransom requests.

The spokesperson declared that the deadline must not be exceeded, asserting that the group had made its position clear.

The development has heightened concerns in Borno and neighbouring states, where communities have endured years of insurgent attacks, abductions, and displacement.

While Nigerian security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the latest threat, analysts say such ultimatums are often aimed at pressuring authorities and creating public anxiety.

Borno State remains one of the regions most affected by insurgency, with thousands of civilians displaced over the years due to repeated attacks by extremist groups.

The Nigerian military has sustained operations against Boko Haram and its splinter factions across the North-East, targeting insurgent enclaves in forested and border areas.

Despite territorial losses inflicted on the group in recent years, sporadic attacks and kidnappings continue to pose security challenges in remote communities.

As of press time, there has been no independent verification of the group’s claim regarding the number of captives, and authorities are expected to assess the authenticity of the video and the scope of the threat.

Security observers note that hostage situations involving insurgent groups remain complex and sensitive, often requiring coordinated intelligence and rescue efforts to safeguard civilian lives.
