A potential security disaster was averted in Akwa Ibom State after operatives of the Nigeria Police Force recovered explosive materials from the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, preventing what authorities say could have resulted in significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

The discovery was made on Monday evening, April 27, 2026, following intelligence reports from officials at the correctional facility who flagged suspicious items within the premises.

Acting swiftly, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit alongside tactical teams to secure the area and conduct a comprehensive sweep.

Police spokesperson Timfon John confirmed that the operation led to the recovery of high-risk materials, including two 90mm high-explosive rounds, a burning fuse, and tools commonly associated with the construction of improvised explosive devices.

The EOD team successfully neutralized the items on-site, eliminating any immediate threat and ensuring the safety of inmates, staff, and surrounding communities.

Although no casualties or escape incidents were recorded, the development has raised fresh concerns about security vulnerabilities at the custodial facility, which has faced challenges related to overcrowding and aging infrastructure.

Authorities have since reinforced security around the centre, increasing surveillance, tightening access controls, and deploying additional patrol units to prevent further threats.

Police say a full-scale investigation is underway to determine how the explosives were smuggled into the facility and to identify those responsible. Forensic analysis of the recovered materials is also ongoing as part of efforts to trace their origin.

Commissioner Azare has called on residents to remain calm but vigilant, urging the public to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

The incident comes as security forces in Akwa Ibom intensify efforts to protect critical infrastructure under ongoing safety initiatives aimed at curbing emerging threats across the state.
