UCL: Fernandes, Carrick Clash Over Tactics After Man Utd’s 4-1 Defeat to Como

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and head coach Michael Carrick have appeared to differ over the team’s tactical approach following their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.

The heavy loss has intensified scrutiny of Carrick, with United’s performance and the contrasting post-match comments raising questions about the team’s tactical direction and the relationship between the captain and his manager.

Carrick apologised to the 700 Manchester United supporters who travelled to watch the match. His reaction at the final whistle, when he crossed the pitch and repeatedly raised his hands towards the fans, also attracted attention.

The gesture recalled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reaction after United’s 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021, a result that preceded his dismissal the following day.

However, Fernandes’ post-match interview with TNT Sports on Wednesday brought the team’s tactical approach into sharper focus.

The Portuguese midfielder questioned United’s decision not to press Como aggressively, arguing that allowing their opponents too much possession gave them the confidence to control the game.

“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence,” Fernandes said.

Asked whether Carrick had got his tactics wrong, Fernandes avoided directly criticising his manager but maintained that responsibility for the team’s approach rested with the coaching staff.

“That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.

Fernandes’ comments suggested that he wanted United to take greater risks when pressing opponents, particularly when attempting to regain possession and disrupt their rhythm.

Carrick was subsequently asked about his captain’s remarks during his post-match press conference. The United boss responded by stressing that effort and commitment remained essential, regardless of the tactical system.

“There’s a little bit of whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win,” Carrick said.

Although Carrick did not mention Fernandes by name, his response placed greater emphasis on the players’ work rate than on the tactical concerns raised by the captain.

The contrasting comments have added another layer of scrutiny to United’s disappointing performance. Fernandes focused on the need for a more aggressive pressing strategy, while Carrick argued that the team’s work rate was fundamental to achieving results.

However, neither man explicitly called for the other’s departure or directly accused the other of undermining the team.

Carrick now faces the challenge of addressing the shortcomings exposed by the defeat, restoring confidence among his players and supporters, and ensuring that United show greater intensity and tactical cohesion in their next outing.
