Obioma leads NPFL Golden Boot race with six goals
Abia Warriors striker Emeka Obioma has emerged as an early contender for the Golden Boot award in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after scoring six goals in nine appearances this season.
The forward, who previously finished as the league’s top scorer in the 2022/23 campaign, has continued his impressive goalscoring form for the Umuahia-based club as he targets another individual accolade.
Obioma scored 16 goals in the 2022/23 season while playing for Enyimba, helping the Aba club win the NPFL title and establishing himself as one of the league’s most prolific forwards.
He also maintained his scoring consistency last season, finding the net 11 times for Abia Warriors to finish among the league’s leading goalscorers.
His six-goal tally this campaign places him ahead of several challengers in the early Golden Boot standings.
Ranchers Bees forward Mohammed Zulkifilu and Doma United’s Sadiq Rilwan are his closest challengers, with both players having scored five goals each.
Barau FC duo Joseph Atule and Sugau Aliyu have registered four goals apiece, while Kayode Oke of Bendel Insurance has also scored four times.
With the league campaign still ongoing, the race for the top-scoring prize remains open as forwards across the NPFL seek to improve their tallies.
Obioma’s previous experience winning the Golden Boot could prove valuable as he attempts to maintain his form and finish the season as the league’s leading scorer once again.
