INEC warns against announcement of illegal results
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned against the pre-emptive announcement of results, insisting that the commission is the only authoritative body recognised by law to announce results of elections in Nigeria.
National Daily gathered that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Olusegun Agbaje, gave the warning at a stakeholders meeting on the preparations for the 2019 general elections in Oshogbo, the state capital.
Addressing participants who included candidates for the National Assembly and House of Representatives elections, heads of security agencies, representatives of political parties, as well as traditional rulers, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje, spelt out electoral offences, noting that some of the infractions usually lead to inconclusive elections.
The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Ige, appealed to the politicians to play politics according to the rules, stressing that Police would not hesitate to arrest anyone that flouts the law.
The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Emmanuel Attah, also sounded warned politicians desist from abuse of NYSC members during the elections.
Some representatives of political parties expressed reservations about the conduct of some INEC officials, as they warned that any act that is not in accordance with the electoral law would be resisted.
