UBA launches climate action week to promote green finance, environmental responsibility
United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has launched a group-wide Climate Action Week to promote environmental awareness, encourage sustainable practices and expand conversations around green financing across its African and international operations.
The five-day campaign, running from October 26 to 30, 2026, is themed “Banking on Africa’s Climate Future” and seeks to integrate environmental responsibility into the bank’s operations, customer engagement and financing solutions.
The initiative began with the deployment of waste segregation bins across UBA offices and measures to reduce single-use plastics at its head offices.
Throughout the week, the bank will share educational content across its media and digital platforms, highlighting climate change and its effects on food prices, energy consumption and urban flooding.
The campaign will also promote recycling, responsible plastic disposal and the role of financial institutions in financing clean energy, sustainable agriculture and environmentally responsible businesses.
UBA Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, said climate change was increasingly affecting everyday life across Africa, from rising food costs to flooding that disrupts homes, businesses and livelihoods.
He said addressing the challenge required collective action by businesses, employees, customers and communities, adding that the campaign would encourage practical steps towards more sustainable living.
As part of its community engagement activities, UBA staff volunteers will participate in a group-wide environmental clean-up exercise on November 7 in major cities across its markets. In Nigeria, the exercise will take place in Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt.

The bank will also sponsor Climate Convergence Week in Lagos on October 30, where it will participate in a speaking session and panel discussion on sustainable development and climate resilience.
The engagement will feature UBA Green Finance, the bank’s initiative supporting eligible businesses investing in cleaner technologies and more sustainable operations.
Alawuba said climate considerations had become increasingly important to business resilience, risk management and long-term economic growth.
According to him, green financing can help businesses adopt sustainable practices while strengthening the private sector’s capacity to withstand climate-related risks.
UBA is also set to join the Sustainability Professionals Institute of Nigeria (SPIN), a move expected to strengthen its environmental, social and governance (ESG) expertise and support employee development in sustainability-related disciplines.
The bank said the Climate Action Week forms part of its broader sustainability strategy, which combines responsible business practices, employee participation, community engagement and green financing.
UBA operates in 20 African countries and has an international presence in the United Kingdom, United States, France and the United Arab Emirates. The financial institution serves more than 45 million customers globally and employs approximately 25,000 people.
