A 500-level student of the Federal University, Dutse, Aminu Mohammed, accused of criticising the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, has been remanded in a custodial centre on Wednesday.

This has sparked reactions on social media from some citizens who are outraged by the decision.

Mohammed had been accused of criticising the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, in a post on his Twitter handle.

A tweep, Victor Isreal said, “Court has ordered Aminu be sentenced to a correctional Centre. Imagine what Aisha Buhari is doing to a citizen of a nation she’s supposed to be the mother. Prison for what exactly? Saying his mind? If Patience Jonathan had done this to a northerner, there’ll be a national unrest!”

“So does this justify what Aisha Buhari did??? In the first place the constitution does not warrant office of the first lady, but grants her some funds to flex. Eventually this women past and present abuse the powers vested on their President husbands,” Sin O tweeted.

Another tweep, Joe Best, shared Mrs Buhari’s image and said, “I think what this woman should be doing now is build more prisons and correctional centres to arrest more social media users or probably ban the use of social media in Nigeria.#AishaBuhari #Aminu.”

As one old tweet of Mohammed, where he threatened to deal with those mourning the killing of a Christian student, Deborah Paul, in Sokoto, goes viral on Twitter, some tweeps pointed out that his continued detention is still not okay.

A tweep, Ada Nwachinemelu, tweeted, “Aminu was wrong to have rejoiced over Deborah’s death. Aisha Buhari is also wrong for the brutalisation of Aminu. We can’t because of the wrong he did congratulate her over what she did to him. What’s wrong is wrong and should never be applauded. She should bow her head in shame.”

Bringing another perspective was Dania Rolland, who wondered why the same technology used track Mohammed hasn’t been used to track terrorists.

He said, “The technology used to track Adamu Aminu over his comment about Aisha Buhari, why have the security agents not been using it to track and arrest terrorists, kidnappers, armed robbers, bandits, herdsmen killers and other criminals around the country?”
