The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Reverend Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has said the newly established Catholic Church-owned university, Augustine University, will contribute immensely to meeting the needs of personal, social and economic development of Nigerians and the nation at large when it resumes October 30.
Speaking to journalists during a tour of facilities at the varsity, Archbishop Martins said the varsity will epitomise the noble tradition of Catholic higher education in seeking to achieve intellectual, cultural, moral and spiritual excellence.
He said “theses would be achieved through the pursuit of a broad spectrum of academic disciplines as we seek to produce scholars who are imbued with the love of universal truth towards the service of God and humanity.
“Augustine varsity provides facilities for training, learning and research that would promote the advancement of knowledge and its practical application to social, political, cultural, economic, scientific and technological problems.
“The varsity would be developed in three phases, with the first phase costing N7bn while phases two and three will gulp N9bn.
Built on 150 hecters of land in the quiet Ilara community of Epe Town, Augustine University will accommodate 500 students who would all reside on the campus so as to ensure adequate concentration with minimal outside interference.
It also boasts of first class teaching and learning methods with multi-media facilities and internet access to aid research and learning.
