Champions League: Chelsea begins title defence with 1-0 victory over Zenit
Chelsea began its Champions League defence on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Zenit St Petersburg. Chelsea was fired into opening defence victory by Romelu Lukaku.
The first half ended goalless.
Lukaku had worked hard for an early goal but was under check by Zenit defenders for about 70 minutes.
Antonio Rudiger also added steam to the team, pushing upfront five minutes into the second half, but was stopped by the opponent’s defence.
Lukaku took control of o good pass from Azpilicueta and nodded the ball past Zenit’s keeper, Stanislav Kritsyuk, to register Chelsea’s goal for a start off victory in the Champions League title defence.
Tuchel brought in Thiago Silva to fortify Chelsea’s defence and prevent Zenit from getting an equalizer.
