China accuses US of violating China’s sovereignty, threatens to punish Taiwan
China on Monday declared that the United States (U.S.) is violating China’s sovereignty under the pretense of supporting so-called ‘democracy’.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Phnom Penh on Wednesday threatened that China will punish those who offend the country’s territorial integrity, following the visit of the US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan on Tuesday.
Wang declared: “This is a complete farce. The United States is violating China’s sovereignty under the guise of so-called ‘democracy’… those who offend China will be punished.”
President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan made a counter declaration that Taiwan with a population of 23 million people cannot be cowed.
President Tsai Ing-wen in an interaction with US Speaker Pelosi in Taipei had declared, “Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down. We will… continue to hold the line of defence for democracy.
“Thank you for taking concrete actions to show your staunch support for Taiwan at this critical moment”.
Pelosi, the highest profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, had said: “Today, our delegation… came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan.”
