China dares US as Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan
China on Tuesday declared that the United States will “pay the price” if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan during her Asia trip.
Pelosi visited Malaysia on Tuesday; she was reported to have intention to visit Taiwan.
China cautioned that Taiwan is its territory, warning that Pelosi’s visit will cause a major provocation.
China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, at a press briefing in Beijing, cautioned: “The US side will bear the responsibility and pay the price for undermining China’s sovereign security interests.”
Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has heightened but would be a higher-profile visitor tension between US and China.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had last week, called US President, Joe Biden, warning that the United States is “playing with fire” on Taiwan.
China’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Hun, on Monday had stated that such a visit would be “very much dangerous, very much provocative”.
White House National Security Council spokesman, John Kirby, however, insisted that Pelosi has the right to visit where she pleased. “The speaker has the right to visit Taiwan.
“There is no reason for Beijing to turn a potential visit consistent with longstanding US policies into some sort of crisis,” John Kirby, declared on Monday.
Kirby maintained that US policy remains unchanged toward Taiwan.
