China set for showdown with U.S. over Taiwan

China has revealed its readiness for showdown with the United States (US) over America’s support for Taiwan. The Chinese military had on Tuesday disclosed that it had conducted a combat readiness patrol in the direction of the Taiwan Strait, as China’s defence ministry expressed strong opposition to the visit of a U.S. congressional delegation to Taiwan. The delegation had landed in Taiwan in a military aircraft.

A Chinese military spokesperson had in a statement., warned that patrol is targeted at the “seriously wrong” words and actions of “relevant countries” on the Taiwan issue and the activities of pro-independence forces in Taiwan.

The defence ministry of Taiwan revealed that six Chinese military aircraft made incursion into its southwestern air defence zone on Tuesday, including four J-16 fighter jets and two surveillance planes.

Taiwan acknowledged on Tuesday that a delegation of members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate arrived Taipei on a U.S. military plane.

Taiwan Premier, Su Tseng-chang, on Wednesday stated that Taiwan-U.S. relations are “very important” and that he respects “mutual visits between friends”.

China’s defence ministry, in a statement, protested that members of the U.S. Congress had arrived in Taiwan by military plane.

“We firmly oppose and strongly condemn this,” China declared. A spokeswoman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office also condemned the US visit to Taiwan, but disputed the perception that war is imminent.

“We urge everyone not to believe or spread rumours,” Zhu Fenglian said on Wednesday.
