Cop stabs tricycle rider, union on rampage, stray bullets, mob action spawn police, civilian deaths in Lagos
A Lagos police officer stabbed a tricycle rider to death in the Abule Egba area of the state, leading to chaos on Thursday.
Dozens of riders took to the streets, carrying the corpse of their colleague as they marched to the Meiran police station.
But a team RRS from the state commissioner of police dispersed the mob.
In the ensuing commotion, a stray bullet hit another man, a vulcanizer. He died on the spot.
The mob got angrier and started bon fires on the road.
“The protesters took the body of the vulcaniser in a tricycle and headed to the station. They were stopped along the way by a team of policemen who took away the corpse,” a witness said.
As the situation escalated, a policeman in a commercial bus became the scapegoat.
The protesters drew him out, and lynched him right there.
The command’s PRO Adekunle Ajisebutu said normalcy had returned.
But the tricycles operators said the police has been extorting them for long in the area.
