Court Grants Dino Melaye Fresh Bail
The FCT High Court sitting in Maitama has granted fresh bail to Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West District in the National Assembly. The Senator is facing an eight-count charge of evading arrest.
Melaye being prosecuted on allegations of conspiracy, resistance to arrest, failure to honour police invitation and intentionally giving false information to the public.
The presiding Judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu, delivering judgment on the application brought
before the court by Mike Ozekhome SAN, Counsel to Melaye, noted that the imperative of the bail cannot be overemphasized, pointing out that it is meant to make a defendant to stand for trial.
The Judge stated that in granting a defendant bail, the court has to consider the nature of the charge, the antecedent of the bail applicant, among others.
Justice Halilu, therefore, upheld the earlier bail granted the Melaye on Jan. 18 and added that the lawmaker should not travel out of the country without a written application to the court.
He, however, directed Ozekhome to caution his client to ensure that he does not comment on the matter before the court in any media.
The Judge adjourned the case to February 25, 2019, for the commencement of trial.
