Edo assembly passes sport commission bill
The Edo House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill for a law to repeal the Bendel Sports Council law, 1967 and enact the Edo State Sports Commission law 2021.
The passage of the bill was sequel to the consideration of a report of the house standing committee on Information, youth and sports at plenary.
The chairman of the committee, Francis Okiye, member, representing Esan North- East 1, while presenting the report, said that the bill, when passed, would eradicate bureaucratic bottlenecks from the administration of sports
Okiye said the bill would create economic development and encourage private sector participation in sports development, amongst others, in the state.
The motion to dissolve into committee of the whole was moved by the majority leader, Henry Okhuarobo, and seconded by the Chief Whip of the house, Emma Okoduwa, representing Esan North East 11.
The House at the committee of the whole considered the bill clause by clause with minor amendments .
After consideration of the bill, the speaker, Marcus Onobun, directed that the bill be given its third reading and added that clean copies of the bill be forwarded to the governor for his assent .
Also at plenary , the House approved the nomination of Tawakalitu Woghiren as a new replacement for Oduware Uwadiae earlier nominated as member of the state’s audit commission.
The request by Gov. Godwin Obaseki to replace the earlier nomination of Oduware Uwadiae was contained in a letter sent to the speaker.
The letter was, however, referred to the house committee on rules and business for appropriate action .
