#EndSARS: U.S. urges Lagos State, FG to take suitable measures to address Lekki killings
The United States (US) on Tuesday urged the Lagos State and Federal governments to take suitable measures to address the killing of unarmed peaceful protesters agitating against police brutality and extra-judicial killings at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos on October 20, 2020. The US in a statement by the United State Mission in Nigeria, acknowledged the conclusion of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on police brutality which final report was submitted to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Monday.
The affirmed that unarmed peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, were killed by the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police in a manner that can be described as massacre. The report also revealed that the venue of the killings was cleaned up overnight to cover up evidence of the killings before proper investigation.
The Panel, thereafter, made recommendations to the government.
The statement read: “The United States welcomes the conclusion of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry with the transmission of its final report.
“We look forward to the Lagos State government’s response as part of a process that represents an important mechanism of accountability regarding the #EndSARS protests and the events that took place near the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.
“Those events led to serious allegations against some members of the security forces, and we look forward to the Lagos State and federal governments taking suitable measures to address these alleged abuses as well as the grievance of the victims and their families.”
