Former Governor of Rivers State is Dead
A former Governor of Rivers State, Brigadier General Anthony Ukpo has died. Family source said the former governor died in Asi Ukpo Calabar Hospital in the early hours of Monday after a brief illness.
Brigadier General Anthony Ukpo (rtd), born on July 16, 1947, an indigene of Cross River State, served meritoriously in the Nigerian Army, and retired in 1993.
Anthony Ukpo was appointed Minister of Information in August 1985 in the Babangida administration. He was appointed Military Governor of Rivers State in 1986.
He was appointed Principal Staff Officer (Civilian equivalent of Chief of Staff) to President Ibrahim Babangida and redeployed to the Presidency in 1989.
He retired from the Nigerian Army in 1993.
