FRSC advocates safety, efficiency, accountability as pillars of sustainable transport at Nigeria Transport Lecture
The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has reiterated that safety, efficiency, and accountability form the foundation of a truly sustainable transportation system.
Speaking on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the 11th Nigeria Transport Lecture (NTL) held in Lagos, Mohammed emphasized that the vision of a sustainable transport ecosystem requires more than regulation—it demands collaboration, innovation, and community-wide responsibility.
Represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Lagos and Ogun States, Assistant Corps Marshal Ann Oladayo, the FRSC boss addressed stakeholders gathered at the event organized by Transport Day Media, saying:
“For us at the FRSC, sustainability in transport begins with safety, efficiency, and accountability. Our mandate goes beyond enforcement—we are partners in policy advocacy, vehicle technology integration, public enlightenment, and inter-agency collaboration.”
He highlighted the Corps’ ongoing efforts in leveraging digital innovation to drive system-wide transformation, citing key advancements in vehicle registration, driver licensing, traffic data analytics, and patrol operations. These initiatives, he noted, are geared toward crash reduction and promoting cleaner, smarter mobility nationwide.
However, Mohammed warned that government efforts alone are insufficient to meet sustainability goals:
“True sustainability requires an all-of-society approach—from regulators, to transport operators, to commuters, to the private sector. This is why fora like this are invaluable.”
Commending the theme of this year’s lecture, “Sustainable Transportation in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges,” Mohammed pledged continued FRSC support toward achieving an inclusive, efficient, and future-ready national transport system.

Delivering the lead paper at the event, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, provided a sobering assessment of current obstacles hindering sustainable transportation in Nigeria.
He pointed to infrastructure deficits, operational inefficiencies, insecurity, labour union challenges, lack of policy coherence, and decarbonisation delays as persistent hurdles to progress.
The lecture attracted top stakeholders across the transportation ecosystem, including representatives from the Lagos State Government, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Nahco Aviance Plc, Nexant Consulting, and academic institutions such as the Lagos State University School of Transport.
