Gunmen attack Police headquarters in Enugu, kill officer, steal weapons
A group of unidentified gunmen launched a deadly attack on the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State, killing a police officer and looting weapons from the station.
The assailants struck in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025, leaving destruction in their wake. According to sources, the gunmen carted away an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns after vandalizing facilities at the station.
The attack claimed the life of Police Constable Akpa Emmanuel, whose death has heightened concerns over the increasing security threats in the region.
The assault has thrown Awgu town into a state of tension, prompting a heavy security deployment in the area. Armed operatives, intelligence officers, and special units have taken over strategic locations to prevent further attacks.

In response to the incident, the new Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a reinforcement of security at the Awgu Division. He has dispatched:
These units are expected to restore order and track down the perpetrators.
The attack occurred just weeks after the posting of a new Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to the station, raising questions about whether the change in leadership played a role in the assault.
The police have launched an intensive investigation into the attack, with intelligence reports suggesting that the assailants may be part of a larger criminal network targeting security facilities in the region.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as efforts intensify to bring the attackers to justice.
