Hrgovic stops Itauma in ninth round to capture vacant IBF heavyweight title

Filip Hrgovic has claimed the vacant IBF heavyweight championship after stopping Britain’s highly rated prospect Moses Itauma in a dramatic ninth-round showdown in London.

The Croatian survived a punishing contest that saw both fighters pushed to their physical limits before Itauma’s corner threw in the towel to prevent further punishment.

Itauma, 21, entered the bout as one of heavyweight boxing’s most promising young talents and had been aiming to become one of Britain’s youngest-ever world champions.

However, Hrgovic’s experience, durability and relentless pressure ultimately proved decisive in what became the toughest test of Itauma’s professional career.

The British fighter appeared to take control during the middle rounds, landing several clean combinations and forcing Hrgovic to absorb heavy punishment.

By the eighth round, Hrgovic appeared visibly fatigued, and Itauma increased the pressure in an attempt to force a stoppage.

The momentum changed dramatically in the ninth round as Hrgovic recovered and began exploiting Itauma’s exhaustion. The young Briton struggled to maintain his balance and became increasingly unable to defend himself effectively.

With Itauma barely able to remain upright, his corner eventually intervened and threw in the towel, bringing the contest to an abrupt end.

The victory represents the biggest achievement of Hrgovic’s career and makes him Croatia’s first world heavyweight champion.

BBC Radio 5 Live boxing expert Steve Bunce described the closing stages as particularly brutal, while noting that Itauma’s trainer, Ben Davison, had appeared increasingly concerned about his fighter’s condition before the stoppage.

Medical personnel surrounded Itauma in his corner after the fight as he recovered from a gruelling encounter that had repeatedly shifted in momentum.

Boxing analysts said the defeat should not erase the considerable promise Itauma had shown throughout his rapid rise.

One boxing analyst said the fight provided the young heavyweight with valuable experience against a proven world-class opponent.

“Itauma has suffered his first major setback, but he has also learned what is required to compete at championship level. His ability to trouble Hrgovic for long periods shows that the potential remains,” the analyst said.

Another expert pointed to Itauma’s decision to press for a stoppage when Hrgovic was tiring as a key turning point.

“The lesson for Itauma is about managing energy and recognising when a fight needs to be paced rather than forced. He will learn from this,” the expert said.

For Hrgovic, the victory represents a major transformation in his career and establishes the Croatian as a world champion in the heavyweight division.

For Itauma, the loss ends his immediate world-title ambitions, but his competitive performance against an experienced Hrgovic suggests his rise may have suffered a setback rather than come to an end.
