IGP Disu calls for stronger global police cooperation at UN Chiefs of Police summit

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening international policing cooperation as a key strategy for promoting global peace, security and sustainable development.

Disu made the remarks while representing Nigeria at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026), held at the United Nations> Headquarters in New York from July 7 to 8, 2026.

The summit brought together ministers, inspectors-general of police, police chiefs and senior representatives of regional and professional policing organisations from around the world to explore ways of enhancing collaboration between national police services and United Nations policing in addressing evolving global security challenges.

Speaking during the summit, the IGP observed that modern criminal networks are increasingly exploiting artificial intelligence, encrypted communications and cyber-enabled platforms to carry out transnational crimes with greater sophistication, posing significant challenges to conventional policing methods.

He stressed that while emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital forensics and geospatial intelligence present valuable opportunities for law enforcement agencies, public trust remains the cornerstone of effective policing.

According to Disu, technological innovation must be deployed in ways that strengthen transparency, accountability, respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law.

The police chief also called for deeper international cooperation, enhanced capacity building and equitable access to digital policing technologies for all member states, arguing that the benefits of technological advancement should not be restricted to only a handful of technologically advanced countries.

He noted that Nigeria remains committed to supporting international peacekeeping efforts and strengthening partnerships with global law enforcement agencies in tackling transnational crime, terrorism, cybercrime and other emerging security threats.

Nigeria’s participation at UNCOPS 2026, he said, reflects the country’s continued resolve to contribute meaningfully to collective global efforts aimed at improving international security and fostering sustainable development.
