The response unit included the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Rapid Response Squad, and the Divisional Police Officer of Asokoro Division.
On arrival, the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the security team while attempting to use the female victims as human shields. The police engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle and successfully rescued the hostages unharmed.
However, the statement disclosed that two community vigilante members sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation. They were rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja, where one was confirmed dead, while the other remains in critical but stable condition.
Commissioner Adewale praised the gallantry of the officers involved in the rescue operation, while also extending condolences to the family of the slain vigilante.
He urged residents of the FCT to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements or strange faces in their neighborhoods. He also reiterated that the Command’s emergency hotlines — 08032003913, 07057337653, and 08061581938 — remain active for swift response.
