Lagos announces traffic diversion ahead of high-level ECOWAS summit on Victoria Island

The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion plan ahead of the forthcoming high-level Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit, scheduled to take place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

In a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state government said the temporary traffic arrangement is aimed at ensuring smooth vehicular movement and bolstering security during the prestigious regional gathering.

The summit, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, is expected to attract several West African heads of state, top diplomats, and key stakeholders in economic and regional development.

With such high-profile attendance, Lagos authorities are taking preemptive measures to manage traffic and maintain order in the bustling commercial hub.

Motorists are advised to take note of the traffic restrictions affecting major roads in the Victoria Island axis, including Ahmadu Bello Way, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, and several adjoining inner roads.

Commuters using these routes are encouraged to follow designated alternative paths to avoid congestion and delays.

Additionally, traffic flowing from Kofo Abayomi Road, Bonny Camp, and the Independence/McEwen Bridge corridor will be redirected through adjacent streets leading to key destinations such as Lekki, Lagos Island, and the Mainland.

Commissioner Osiyemi assured the public that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other enforcement agencies will be fully deployed to strategic locations across the affected areas to provide guidance, ensure a seamless flow of traffic, and minimize disruption throughout the duration of the summit.

“We appeal to all road users to cooperate with traffic officials and exercise patience as Lagos hosts this important regional event focused on strengthening economic and diplomatic ties across West Africa,” Osiyemi said.

The summit will also feature several commemorative activities, with Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — the current Chairman of ECOWAS — expected to deliver a keynote address, reinforcing the country’s leadership role within the bloc.
