Malami denies involvement in EFCC investigation of Tinubu
The Attorney general of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, on Tuesday denied involvement the re-opening of the investigation of the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State Governor, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Malami on Channels television programme on Tuesday monitored from Lagos, insisted that the AGF and Justice Ministry office is not involved in the re-opening of the investigation of Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State and APC national leader. In his view, the EFCC is performing is duties as mandate by the Act establishing the commission.
The Justice Minister acknowledged the agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom for the repatriation of £4.2million as part of the recovered funds looted by former Governor James Ibori of Delta State. He disclosed that the government is still negotiating the return of more £100 million of Ibori loot from the UK.
The Justice Minister also revealed that the Nigerian government is still negotiating the return of more looted funds of former head of state, late General Sani Abacha, worth over $100 million.
The AGF added that the P&ID case which was about to cost Nigeria a fine of $10 billion has been “a success story.”
According to Malami, “Our position as a government is being strengthened day-in-day-out. We are optimistic.”
The minister also said that no subpoena has been served on him to appear before a High Court to testify in the prosecution of Abdulrasheed Maina.
Meanwhile, Tinubu is being investigated by the EFCC under the leadership of the new Executive Chairman, Bawa, which has requested the ICPC to forward Tinubu’s assets declaration forms before he became Governor of Lagos State and on exit from office between 1999 and 2007.
