Marcelo announces retirement after legendary career with Real Madrid
Marcelo, the iconic Brazil defender and Real Madrid legend, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36, bringing an end to a remarkable career.
Known for his flair, leadership, and consistency, Marcelo leaves behind a legacy as one of the most decorated players in football history.
The left-back earned 58 caps for Brazil, but it was his long and illustrious career with Real Madrid that defined his legacy.
After progressing through the youth ranks at Brazilian club Fluminense, Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007, where he would go on to win 25 major trophies over 15 years, including five UEFA Champions League titles.
In a heartfelt video shared on his social media, Marcelo reflected on his time at Real Madrid: “At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door, and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileno. Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, one of the captains, and so many magical nights at the Bernabeu. What a journey!”
Marcelo was named club captain in 2021, making history as the first non-Spaniard to hold the armband in 117 years. His leadership and influence were integral to the club’s continued success, particularly in the Champions League.

In 2022, Marcelo left Real Madrid to join Greek side Olympiacos but mutually terminated his contract after just five months. He then returned to his boyhood club Fluminense in 2023, where he played two seasons, making 68 appearances.
Marcelo parted ways with Fluminense in November 2024 following a public fallout with manager Mano Menezes.
Although his playing career has come to an end, Marcelo remains committed to football. “My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything,” he concluded in his farewell message.
