Maresca reinstates Chilwell for Carabao Cup after summer exit rumors
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that defender Ben Chilwell will be included in the squad for the upcoming Carabao Cup match against League Two leaders Barrow.
This will mark Chilwell’s first appearance of the season, following months of uncertainty about his future at the club.
The England international was expected to leave Stamford Bridge over the summer, after Maresca publicly stated that Chilwell had no future with Chelsea. However, the situation has shifted, with Maresca now welcoming the left-back back into first-team training.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Maresca expressed optimism about Chilwell’s return. “Ben Chilwell will be in the squad for tomorrow’s game. He is training, and hopefully we can give him some minutes,” the Chelsea boss said.
Football analyst Rob Green noted, “This U-turn signals a significant change in Maresca’s approach. Chilwell’s experience and skill set could still be valuable for Chelsea, especially given the depth they need this season.”
Chilwell’s return is a surprise move, as he was largely sidelined and linked with a departure during the summer.
However, his reintegration into the squad could provide much-needed defensive stability as Chelsea continues to navigate a packed season schedule.
