Messi bows out of international football after glittering Argentina career

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 21-year career with Argentina to an emotional close.

The 39-year-old Argentina captain leaves the national team as the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer, having made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals.

His decision marks the end of an era for Argentina and world football, with Messi having transformed from a gifted youngster from Rosario into one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

In an emotional Instagram post on Monday, Messi acknowledged the pain of stepping away from international football but said he had reached the point where the time had come.

“It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts, deep in my soul, but I realise that the time has come,” he said.

From Rosario to Global Stardom

Messi’s remarkable journey began in Rosario, Argentina, before taking him to Barcelona, where he established himself as one of football’s most dominant players.

During his Barcelona career, Messi became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 672 goals. He won 10 La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League trophies and seven Copa del Rey titles.

His individual brilliance was recognised with a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, as well as multiple FIFA Best awards and European Golden Shoes.

But despite his extraordinary club success, international glory remained elusive for much of his career.

World Cup Glory Ends the Wait

The defining moment came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Messi captained Argentina to the title, scoring seven goals and winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

The triumph ended years of disappointment with the national team and silenced much of the criticism that had followed Messi throughout his international career.

He had already helped Argentina win the Copa América in 2021 before securing another Copa América title in 2024.

His international honours also include Olympic gold in 2008 and the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2005.

With the World Cup finally added to his collection, Messi’s international legacy was complete.

Messi’s retirement closes one of the most remarkable chapters in international football.

For Argentina, he was more than a captain. He carried the expectations of a football-obsessed nation through painful defeats before eventually delivering the major trophies supporters had long demanded.

His journey with Argentina included heartbreak, criticism and near misses, but ultimately ended with the Copa América and World Cup triumphs that cemented his status as a national icon.

At 39, the legendary No. 10 is stepping away from the international stage.

The shirt may eventually belong to another player.

The legacy, however, remains Messi’s.
