NCCE upgrades Ameer Shehu Idris college to College of Education
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has upgraded the Ameer Shehu Idris College of Advance Studies, Zaria to a College of Education.
Dr Yusuf-Shehu Aliyu, the Chairman of the NCCE Accreditation Team, made this known while briefing newsmen on Friday in Zaria.
Aliyu said the Ameer Shehu Idris College of Education Zaria has also been accredited to issue National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Mathematics, Integrated Science, Islamic Studies, Social Studies, Arabic, English and Hausa.
He said the management should reflect the change of name and status in everything that concerns the institution.
”Reflecting the change of name is one of the ways of showing that the college has been upgraded from a College of Advance Studies to a College of Education.
He noted that the team has observed the areas of strength and gray areas which need to be improved, and they include inadequate office accommodation for Heads of Departments and Lecturers.
“Senior lecturers and Chief Lecturers were not found in most of the departments, he added there was need for the school to employ principal or senior lecturers to improve the staff mix.
“The College should also employ more mathematics lecturers, student advisers and workshop for the department stressing that the department should embark on advocacy to get more students,’’ he said.
The team commended the college for availability of adequate land for further development, but decries lack of adequate records keeping in ICT.
In his remarks, Prof. Tijjani Abubakar, Chairman, Monitoring and Implementation Committee, said the college has noted its areas of strength and weaknesses and promised to improve on it.
On the issue of office accommodation for staff, Abubakar said every head of department would be given a well-equipped office and the college would construct more conveniences for the staff and students at the institution.
He said the College would leverage on Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Federal College of Education and other Institutions in Zaria to improve its academic staff strength.
