PANDEF leader Edwin Clark passes away at 97

Renowned elder statesman, former Federal Commissioner for Information, and South-South leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, has passed away at the age of 97.

Clark, who was a key figure in Nigeria’s political and socio-economic landscape, died on Monday night, February 17, 2025, as confirmed in an official statement issued by his family.

“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday 17th February, 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family,” the statement, signed by Prof. C. C. Clark, read.

Chief Edwin Clark was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and advocacy circles, known for his fierce defense of the Niger Delta region and its development.

As the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), he championed the cause of resource control, environmental justice, and economic empowerment for the people of the oil-rich region.

Born in 1927 in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Clark’s political career spanned several decades. He served as Federal Commissioner for Information during the Yakubu Gowon military regime and played a pivotal role in national discourse even after leaving public office.

His influence extended to legislative and advisory roles, where he remained vocal on governance, restructuring, and federalism.

Following the announcement of his death, political leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups have begun paying tribute to the late statesman.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Clark as “a father figure whose wisdom and guidance shaped many leaders across generations.”

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, also expressed deep sorrow, calling his passing “the end of an era of unyielding advocacy for the rights of the Niger Delta people.”

The news of Clark’s demise comes just days after the passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who died at the age of 96. Their deaths mark the exit of two of Nigeria’s most influential voices on national unity and regional development.

As the nation mourns, arrangements for Clark’s burial are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
