Police arrest Biafra President, 21 others

The manhunt for separatist Biafra movement has continued in Eastern Nigerian. National Daily gathered that the Enugu State Police Command on Wednesday arrested the leader of a proscribed pro-Biafra group, Biafran Zionist Movement, Benjamin Onwuka.

Onwuka, President of the Biafran Zionist Movement, was said to be arrested with 21 members of the Biafra Zionist movement.

The Enugu Police Command spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement in Enugu, indicated that the suspects were arrested within the Enugu metropolis working on intelligence information.

Amaraizu narrated that Onwuka resurfaced Wednesday with some members of his proscribed group and attempted to take over the Enugu State Government House and other state institutions by hoisting the outlawed Biafra flags and engaging in assemblage close to such places.

The Police spokesperson noted that the suspects had been helping the Police in their investigations.

Onwuka had been standing trial in the court over his alleged involvement in murder, armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.

The various Biafra movements had issued stay-at-home order on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967, by late Odumegwu Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.  The declaration subsequently, led to 30 months of Civil War in Nigeria, 1967 to January 1, 1970.
