Police detain man over death of 8-year-old daughter during domestic dispute

Operatives of the Akwete Divisional Police Headquarters under the Abia State Police Command have arrested a man, Mr. Chidi Stanley of Obiohuru, over the death of his eight-year-old daughter, Miss Chiamaka Stanley, following a domestic altercation that turned tragic.

The incident was confirmed on Saturday in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Maureen Chinaka.

According to the police, the suspect was involved in a dispute with his sister, Mrs. Chinyere Stanley, when he allegedly threw a stone at her during the altercation. The object reportedly struck his daughter, Chiamaka, who was nearby at the time.

The child was rushed to a hospital, where she was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

Police authorities described the development as deeply unfortunate, noting that preliminary findings indicate the fatal injury occurred unintentionally during the confrontation.

The command further alleged that rather than immediately reporting the matter to law enforcement authorities, members of the family attempted to conceal the incident and began preparations for a secret burial.

However, acting on intelligence, police operatives arrived at the scene before the burial could take place.

Officers reportedly demanded access to the child’s body and invited members of the family to the station for questioning.

DSP Chinaka disclosed that the situation escalated when some youths in the community allegedly mobilised in support of the family and resisted police intervention.

According to her, the officers were denied access to the deceased and faced hostility from agitated youths, creating what she described as a tense and potentially violent atmosphere.

To prevent further escalation, the officers documented the scene — including the already-dug grave — and tactically withdrew.

“The mob remained violent. Officers were compelled to defend themselves, protect police property, and prevent further breakdown of law and order,” the police spokesperson stated.

The suspect has since been taken into custody, and the matter transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.

Police authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed and urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.

The tragic incident has sparked concern within the Obiohuru community, with authorities warning against obstruction of justice and mob actions that could further complicate the legal process.
